Tradewinds Travel Club Exploring Najac

Posted on 10.17.12

Considered one of the most beautiful villages in France, the village of Najac is located just south of Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Unusual from most other villages anywhere, Najac runs in one long strip along the top of a ridge and is overseen by one main building otherwise known as the Najac fortress. Stunning views of the surrounding countryside make this an ideal vantage point for the lover of scenery.

The Village

Located right above the Aveyron River, it has been in existence for centuries. Though once famous for its ham, today, the small population still surviving in this amazing little village are reliant on tourism and agriculture in generally. Located in the Midi Pyrenees, Najac is one of only around 140 villages known as the most beautiful in the country today (Beaux Villages de France).

For the interest tourist, the village is lovely and fun to explore. Offering not only just beautiful views but also wonderful architecture dating back to its roots over the centuries. For the traveler willing to simply relax and stroll, a great way to take it all in is to simply start at one end and walk through the town stopping along the way to visit the market place and the tourist office. Cafes, small shops and historic sites along the way offer a unique look at a different side of France.

The Castle

Of all the fun things to see along the way, by far the most imposing and also most well know is the towering castle high up on the ridge above. Built by the villagers in the 13th century, the Chateau de Najac or the Royal fortress of Najac was ordered by the brother of Saint Loiuse, Alphonse de Poitiers. Though the castle is partly destroyed, it is listed as an historic monument and is opened to visitors by its owners today.

The world is filled with amazing sites and locations unique from anywhere else on earth, all you have to do is find them. Don’t limit yourself when you travel. Take time instead to get to know the special, unique and perhaps even more stunning lesser known areas when you travel.
